HBM is displaying a wide array of data acquisition equipment – including several recently launched products – on Stand D96 at this year’s Aero Engineering show in November. Visitors will be able to experiment with the different products and get additional information from the highly trained team while reflecting on their measurement needs.

Among the recent launches on display will be HBM’s Genesis HighSpeed GEN3i mobile data recorder. This device extends the capabilities of these well-established products and has been designed to be particularly compact making it ideal for mobile use. It features a sturdy carrying handle for convenience while transporting the equipment and is ready for immediate use.

The GEN3i transfers data directly to the storage medium at speeds as high as 200 MB/s while up to 96 input channels can be configured. Data can be continuously transferred to hard disk and fast sweeps recorded so that users benefit by recording, saving and visualizing millions of measurement data items per second. The GEN3i data recorder is complemented by 21 different data acquisition cards making it suitable for a wide range of applications including generators, turbines and motors.

HBM has also recently launched a range of specialist strain gauges developed for use with composite materials. These materials are widely used throughout the aerospace industry because they allow various light and very tough components to be easily and quickly produced.

The difficulty is that composites are made of many layers of different polymers resulting in a structure that can behave quite differently from a similar metal component. The four different strain gauges comprise two linear strain gauges – one with, and one without, strain relief – a strain gauge with three measuring grids and a strain gauge with a T-rosette. HBM’s latest specialist strain gauges help determine the probability of component failure especially as the strain levels in fibre composites are often higher than found in equivalent conventional materials.

Visitors developing electric drives will be interested in HBM’s eDrive test solution that gives engineers access to a wide spectrum of dynamic and real-time raw data. The eDrive utilises the Genesis HighSpeed measurement data acquisition system and T12 torque transducer to give continuous and synchronous acquisition of both electrical and mechanical power at rates of up to two million measurements per second per channel. The captured data can easily be analysed and used to modify the drive train for greater electrical efficiency. HBM developed the e-Drive concept because existing methodologies are considered too crude and generic to give engineers the detailed analysis required.

HBM’s stand will also feature the PMX measuring amplifier system along with its latest PX460 frequency card. This measuring amplifier is the ideal solution for numerous production and test measurement tasks while providing effective machine and plant monitoring through the use of real-time Industrial Ethernet protocols Ethercat and Profinet.

The amplifier samples signals at 19.2 kHz, internally processes them and transfers the results in real time allowing mean or limit values to be easily determined. The modular system has been ruggedly designed and can be used as a stand-alone device or as part of an automation network where several PMX devices can be automatically synchronized.

Additional equipment on display during the show includes HBM’s QuantumX MX1615 measuring amplifier module and the latest developments in optical measuring. The MX1615 enables connection of up to 16 strain gauge channels in a variety of configurations including full- half- and quarter-bridge with both 3-wire and patented Kreuzer 4-wire circuit.

The MX1615 can easily be combined with other modules to rapidly create distributed measurement architecture because it forms part of HBM’s comprehensive QuantumX measuring system. This means that it can easily be combined with analog outputs, digital inputs/outputs, CAN bus or EtherCAT connections. Data transfer to a PC is simplified by the use of Ethernet TCP/IP.

Engineers needing to determine stress in components where conventional technologies are limiting – such as with high levels of strain, high electromagnetic stress or in highly explosive environments – will be intrigued by the latest developments in optical measurement.

Optical strain gauges from HBM are as simple to install as classical SGs and are not electromagnetically susceptible making them suitable for use in highly explosive atmospheres. Several optical strain gauges can be used on a single fibre and the optical measurement chain is individually adapted to suit requirements.

In addition to equipment from its extensive product portfolio, HBM will have key personnel available to answer any questions visitors may have about data acquisition and analysis in aerospace applications.

HBM can provide additional expertise such as an extensive range of accessories and different specialist articles to highlight various aspects of measuring strain in fibre composites. In addition HBM supports its customers with training and contract installation to ensure optimum operational usage.
