Cable management system successfully installed at munitions factory

Cablofil steel wire tray has been used as the cable management system for a new 350,000 ft2 BAE Systems munitions plant on the site of the former Dunlop factory in Washington, Tyne & Wear.

Comprising a production facility, a two-storey office and welfare block, security gatehouses, stores and an effluent processing house, the munitions factory will manufacture artillery shells, mortar bodies and other munitions cases.

Bailey Building Services, the M&E and engineering solutions arm of NG Bailey was responsible for both the category A and category B electrical fit out and chose to use the steel wire tray throughout the production, office and welfare facilities to ensure that the cable management installation was suitable for the environment.

Andrew Hodson, Project Manager, North Division, commented: “A steel wire tray system was specified because it’s lightweight and quick to install.  The ceiling voids were relatively small and the flexibility of the steel wire tray system helped a lot in this regard, allowing us to fit the cable management around the other services. We chose the Cablofil system as it required less bracketry and fewer fixings which reduced installation times still further.”
