Women and girls wanting a career with real spark are being urged to attend an electrical engineering event in Sheffield this month.
A free taster session explaining what a career as an electrician involves is taking place for women of all ages – whether it’s school pupils looking at their options or women who want a career change.
Visitors will get the latest information about apprenticeships, jobs and careers in the electrical engineering industry, training courses starting this September, and have the chance to try practical activities and meet female electricians.
The event is being held at The Sheffield College City campus, Granville Road, Sheffield, on Monday June 22nd from 10am until 2.30pm.
Heather Smith, principal, The Sheffield College, said: “The construction and engineering industry is changing and offering more opportunities, with a pressing need to fill skills gaps. We are committed to raising awareness of the rewarding careers available for females as well as males, challenging stereotypes and highlighting the inspirational role models who are leading the way.”
The organisations supporting the event are The Sheffield College, Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WEST), NICEIC, the nation’s leading voluntary regulatory body for electricians, and JTL Training.
Liz Kettle, WEST Outreach Worker, said: “There are some really successful female electricians already working in Sheffield, and we want to see more! It doesn’t even occur to most girls and women, but it’s a great job that’s really interesting and rewarding.”
Emma Clancy, chief executive, NICEIC, added: “Learning a trade offers women the opportunity to develop a skill for life that enables them to work on their own or within a team, and more importantly allows them flexible working hours that can revolve around home or family commitments. Through our Jobs for the Girls campaign NICEIC has actively encouraged more women into the electrical industry. The aim of this partnership is to open up the opportunities that exist within it, to women of all ages.”
