The increasing popularity of LED lighting for Hazardous Areas within the offshore oil and gas sector has been a major factor in the growth of the Ashington based A-Belco Group, a diverse group of companies offering electrical and mechanical engineering excellence to a wide range of industries and markets worldwide.
The Group's Hadar Lighting Division was the first to market with an Ex’e’ LED floodlight certified through Sira for both ATEX and IECEx applications in 2010. The benefits of their innovative HDL106 LED floodlight were soon grasped by the offshore sector and the lights have since become the standard for many drilling operators and oil companies. Amongst the many projects where HDL106's have been specified is Western Australia's huge Gorgon Project, one of the world's largest natural gas projects and the largest single resource natural gas project in Australia's history.
The new lights produce purer light, weigh less, last far longer than traditional sodium or halogen equivalents, have no warm up period, produce very little heat and have an expected lifespan in excess of 10 years without any maintenance in line with industry’s preferred ‘fit and forget’ requirements. In addition, power consumption of the new floodlights is approximately 40% of traditional equivalent, with varying beam patterns ensuring the light only goes where it’s designed to go rather than being wasted.
Hadar Lighting, however, is only one of the Group's five Divisions with others providing integrated pre-fabricated M&E modules for the construction industry (MEP Solutions), bespoke electrical engineering solutions for rail network (Electrical Engineering) and industrial plugs, sockets and combination units for the control and distribution of electrical power (Industrial Connectors).
The remaining Division, A-Belco Hazardous Area, is a long established specialist manufacturer of electrical installation products for potentially explosive atmospheres within the offshore, petro-chemical and process industries worldwide. The company provide both standard and bespoke products for Hazardous Area Zones 1, 2, 21 & 22, Gas and Dust.
Their portfolio of products includes Flameproof Junction Boxes, Control Panels, Control Stations, Lighting, Plugs and Receptacles, Switches, Circuit Breakers and Cable Glands, all designed and manufactured within internationally recognised protection concepts. All products are built to harmonise with European Standards and the flameproof enclosures are certified in conformance with A-Belco’s own QAN to ensure complete ATEX compliance. Their equipment is independently certified by various UK and European Notified Bodies.
Bob Scott, Divisional Director, commented, "The design and manufacture of electrical equipment for Hazardous Areas has been a core activity at the very heart of the Group. As we have continued to diversify into other specialist areas, whether this be Hadar Lighting's offshore expertise or Industrial Connectors' vast experience of general Industrial applications, we have accumulated an impressive electrical engineering knowledge base with in-house electrical and mechanical design engineers. This gives us a huge advantage in offering bespoke equipment of the very highest quality.
Hadar Lighting and A-Belco Hazardous Area will be exhibiting at the Offshore Europe exhibition in Aberdeen in September.
