At the Sensors & Instrumentation exhibition (30th September – 1st October 2015) at the NEC, Birmingham, instrumentation specialist Impress Sensors & Systems will be showcasing new ranges of ATEX-certified industrial pressure transmitters and submersible level transmitters.

The IND range of ATEX-certified industrial pressure transmitters is manufactured in the UK by Impress Sensors. The transmitter has a piezoresistive ceramic or stainless steel silicon pressure sensor installed in a stainless steel housing, providing it with excellent media compatibility across a wide range of hazardous gas or dust environments, including applications in oil & gas, marine, chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and water treatment plants. The transmitters are available in pressure ranges from 0.1 to 700 bar in gauge, sealed gauge or absolute reference versions, with various mV, Voltage and Current output options.

The IWSL range of ATEX-certified submersible level transmitters are designed for continuous submersion in liquids such as water, fuel, oil and other chemicals. The transmitters use the latest piezoresistive media isolated silicon sensing technology and a stainless steel diaphragm, which provide excellent stability, repeatability and resolution in a wide range of hydrostatic level measurement applications in potentially hazardous gas or dust environments.

Also on the stand will be the IMTG range of gauging level transmitters, manufactured in the UK by Impress Sensors. The transmitters are designed for continuous submersion in liquids such as water, fuels and oils, but have been redesigned to better suit the applications and the range extended to include a new plastic (Delrin) version and a digital RS485 Modbus version. Typical applications include small, 1-10m depth tanks or containers, where conventional mechanical level switches and sensors are not suitable because of reliability issues and a higher degree of level ‘control’ and measurement is required. Other applications include measurements of static tank level, container or chamber level, vehicle tank level, standby generator fuel monitoring equipment, and asset monitoring of intermediate bulk carriers.

An engineering polymer (DuPont Delrin) version is available for use in corrosive media such as diesel, petrol and other aggressive chemicals. This is useful if the tanks have external earthing issues that would normally affect metal products – a common problem in remote telemetry sites with standby generators.

Modbus version

An RS485 ASCII version of the IMTG range (and other submersible transmitter ranges) will also be on the stand. These transmitters are supplied with a digital RS485 interface, which outputs the pressure and temperature values in serial ASCII format. The electronics incorporate a microprocessor-based amplifier, with level and temperature measurements made possible by RS485 serial communication. Impress provides a standard software package, which enables the user to interface via USB and read the values back. There is also a facility to data log via the software, which is useful for checking installation and behaviours of the application.

Pressure sensors with digital i2C interface

Visitors to the stand can also view a range of stainless steel pressure sensors with digital i2C interface. Unlike traditional industrial pressure sensors with analogue output signal, the DCT 532 series provides a digital i2C interface, making it suitable for a wide range of pressure measurement applications in OEM and machine building applications, including medical devices, pharmaceutical machines, food processing machines and other process engineering equipment.

The i2C interface provides complete integration flexibility, enabling localised bus configuration, which gives the user serial communications with the sensor. The synchronous master-slave interface enables communication between a master and up to 127 slave devices. As well as typical settings such as slave address and data format, units for pressure and other parameters can be set up.
