Siemens is supplying security, safety and building automation technology for Brasilia’s Mane Garrincha National Stadium, the most modern and sustainable sports arena to be built in Latin America.

This complex stadium is hosting seven World Cup games during the Fifa World Cup taking place in Brazil from 12th June – 13th July 2014. The arena features the most sophisticated technological solutions ever used in Brazil and is one of the most advanced structures of this type in the world. The turnkey project includes the supply of more than 4,000 cameras, 150 turnstiles for controlling access at some 6,000 control points and approximately 6,000 fire detection points.

With a seating capacity of 70,000, the stadium is Brazil’s second largest sports arena and by utilising state of the art camera technology to guarantee greater security, the CCTV system supplied by Siemens can identify spectators throughout the stadium’s stands. The system, which is managed by high processing capacity software, delivers password protected hierarchical access control, so that agencies such as the police, fire brigade and private security firms can identify potential incidents and take appropriate action.

By integrating the database with ticket sale systems, the access control system will enable the facility’s operators to promote a wide variety of events. The turnstiles at the arena’s entry points will be able to read identification technologies such as 1D and 2D barcodes, mifare and smartcards. As the system’s data will be fully encrypted, security of operations is guaranteed and the opportunity for ticket forgery is minimised. Critical  areas at the stadium are fully protected and operators will not be required to carry keys to open the numerous stadium gates.

All the technologies supplied are integrated into a command and control centre. The stadium is set to be the first sports stadium in the world to be awarded the highest sustainability certificate, the LEED Platinum. The arena is on target to achieve this status which is achieved only by buildings meeting the highest environmental standards. Founded on carbon neutrality, recycling and complete access via public transport, this environmentally friendly stadium consolidates Brasilia’s status as a world leader in sustainable urban planning, creating a valuable legacy for other sections of the local economy.

Siemens’ solutions have already been installed at more than 150 sports facilities worldwide including Europe’s most advanced and profitable sports facilities such as the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.
